"We needed someone to schedule and help drive projects through our studio. Our last two hires were totally inept…maybe laughable. Dr. Mark’s “Best Fit™” process not only helped us identify the right person for the job but provided valuable insights into our own culture and processes. While implementing his process, Mark provides value on many levels and has an obvious capacity to address many business process issues. Our team admires his uncanny ability to mitigate conflict on hot issues and to provide observations from both the big picture and ground level perspectives. "

Brief Case Studies

Brief Case Study One
A product innovation and engineering firm requested help from Empower Consulting to hire a general manager to oversee the day to day operations for an absentee owner.  Two years earlier, a GM was hired with such disastrous results that the owner reluctantly had to return and run the business.

After several high quality candidates were referred from an executive search firm, Empower's  Executive Best Fit System™ was implemented. While Dr. Mark had not met any of the candidates, it quickly became apparent that two stood head and shoulders above the rest.  He approached the owner and commented “you have a horse race on your hands, don’t you?”

The owner admitted being torn between the two, but favored the final candidate with whom he felt he could build the best relationship. He also believed this candidate possessed the ability to challenge and unite the fragmented management team. I inquired which candidate he thought the management team would endorse to which he responded, “I think they’ll agree with me.”  I suggested we prepare how he might handle a 50/50 split which, to his surprise, is exactly what he encountered.  Fortunately, the managers were unanimous in their belief that either candidate would likely excel in the role.

Now one year later, the previously divided management team is much more cohesive and all members are functioning at a significantly higher level. Holding each other accountable for past mistakes has been replaced by accountability for their own performance. Dr. Mark has been retained to assist in strategic and personnel issues and at the time of this writing, the company is in the due diligence phase to acquire a competitor.

Brief Case Study 2
A branding and design company was frustrated over past hiring decisions. New business had been coming in at such a rapid rate they were experiencing difficulty meeting deadlines and customer communication was suffering. The need for a project manager became apparent.

When Dr. Mark brought the core team together, fundamental differences regarding how key employees assessed the company’s needs and the role of a project manager emerged. Following a rather arduous management meeting, consensus was finally achieved and the position was renamed “project coordinator.”

The success of the project coordinator has had a profound effect on the company.  Employees have been freed up to focus on their core talents and responsibilities and customers are benefiting from improved communication.  What initially was viewed as a “cost” has proven to be a very worthwhile investment.

Brief Case Study 3
A company in the service industry acquired a competitor and the woman owner with a marketing background, inherited an all female staff.  Issues of entitlement, competitiveness and resistance to working as a team were problematic from the beginning.  At one point, tension escalated to a level that termination of some employees was being considered.

Dr. Mark began meeting with the owner to address critical issues.  She took copious notes and embraced the goal of becoming a great leader.  Utilizing her emerging leadership skills, she challenged the team to “step up to the plate.” While at times the process has been frustrating, it has also been exhilarating and the results are impressive.

She reports the team is functioning at a level much higher than she ever imagined, and each team member is excited about taking on additional responsibilities.  This has freed her up to focus on more strategic and visionary functions to grow the company and provide the highest level of service to her customers.
